Wedding Dress Inspired Wedding Cake | Oceancliff Newport, RI Wedding Cake

Every once in a while we design a custom wedding cake based on a bride's wedding gown.

After receiving a recent comment on our blog about a fan's hope to see more posts relating to wedding dresses, we thought it would be perfect to share the inspiration Ana found in our bride Aubrey's wedding dress to design a custom wedding cake.

Aubrey tied the knot in the summer of 2011 at Oceancliff in Newport, RI.  We always enjoy creating a wedding cake for the Newport Mansions, as they provide the perfect setting to showcase our work.

She came to us in the hope of designing a custom wedding cake that would coordinate with her beautiful Monique Lhuillier gown.

Ana encourages brides to bring to their consultations photographs and swatches of their wedding dress fabrics and details. It's helpful to have visuals to assist Ana in her design process, and it's also great for the client to show exact details she would like to see incorporated into the custom design.

The more visuals you bring to a consultation, the better. It is also important to have a plan of what you don't like so you can help Ana come up with the perfect design for you!

Aubrey's dress consisted of a bodice with detailed beading, flower appliqués, and embroidery.

With Aubrey's input, Ana sketched a design incorporating details from her bodice.
Ana's Custom Designed Sketch for Aubrey's Wedding Cake

The wedding dress-inspired sketch came to life beautifully in a five-tiered custom wedding cake.

Each tier was covered with champagne colored fondant and decorated with Ana's signature freehand piping technique.

Echoing the embroidered ferns on Aubrey's dress, Ana hand-painted ferns and details on the bodice of the dress. The appliqué flowers were replicated on the cake as well. Each flower was handcrafted from sugar and attached to the cake.

Of course, Ana's custom handcrafted sugar flowers adorned the top and base tier of the design.

The colors of flowers included pinks, champagne, and creams.

This wedding cake was not only beautiful to look at but equally delicious. The cake consisted of: Dark chocolate cake with alternating layers of Dulce de Leche & Bittersweet Ganache, and White Tahitian Vanilla Cake with alternating layers of Strawberry &Vanilla Mousseline.
